 ☑️ wildcamping

You want to escape the Belgian weather? 🌧️ You only have a week off to go on a roadtrip? You are in for driving some hours but also not too much? You want to be immersed in beautifull nature in a country where wild camping is allowed? Than this will be the ideal roadtrip for you! We introduce the Basque country in Spain. The Basque Country is located in the western Pyrenees, stradding the border between France and Spain. In total a 10 hour drive but with nice stops along the road this roadtrip is worth the drive. 🗺️

Basque Country is known for it´s beautifull nature. Wild camping is allowed, which makes this an ideal roadtrip destination to go to with a Toptent!

This roadtrip is unique as you can enjoy two countries in only a few days. 🌍 Leaving from Belgium it is interesting to take some stops in France. You can take a first stop in Paris, if you are in for some city sightseeing. In summer also a lovely stop inbetween to enjoy the vibrant vibe of the city of love, have a stroll and visit some monuments, do some shopping and enjoy terraces. For an overnight stay close to the city you have many options. Camping de Paris is a known camping which is located 20 minutes from the heart of Paris. You can also check Campspace at all times. I really like Campspace as the campings are mostly more trendy or hipster compared to a lot of old and dirty campings. Next to that they offer a lot of eco- or farm- campings which is from my opinion nice to stay as the campings only have a few pitches which makes your stay peacefull. Next to that you can also use the Caravanya app , which is a combination of campings and wild camping spots. Ideal if you didn´t book anything in advance. In France you can´t go wildcamping, so if you really want to you can always search a spot and ask the landlord if you can have an overnight stay on it´s land.🌱

If you are not really in for the buzzy city of Paris you can also chose to stop in Rambouillet. Rambouillet is a commune located in the region of Paris, located in the south of Yvelines in the region of Ile-De-France. Huttopia is a cool camping organisation located in a forest. If you want to behave in a nature environment instead of a camping close to the city, go to Huttopia. After Rambouillet you can definitely drive further and pass by Orleans, Poitiers, Niorts and Saintes untill you arrive in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux, is a lovely city in France known for its wine growing region. This city is definitly worht a visit if you haven´t seen this yet. You can visit the city in 1 day if you want, but stay 2 days if you have time. Enjoy the atmosphere, the gastronomy and the French architecture. If you have interest and time, definitely visit a wine hous in this area. There are multiple tours available in the region of Bordeaux. Have a tasting and enjoy this local speciality. 🍷

Crossing the border

Only 3 hours from Bordeaux, you arrive in the Basque Country. Here you can chose to go to Biarritz, San Sebastian or Zarautz. Biarritz and Zarautz are seaside towns known for it´s laid back atmosphere and are great if you like water activities. There are long sandy beaches and multiple surf schools. A great surf school in Zarautz is Puka Surf. Next to that you can go for a hike and visit some lookout points (Mount Talaimendi or Santa Barbara Hermitage). Enjoy the beautifull view on the region! You can visit the old town of Zarautz where there are some little markets but it´s rather small. For food you definitely need to try some fish & seafood as we are located at the seaside. Grilled seafood is one of the specialties in the region. Next to that Zarautz has around 20 wineries within a 15 minutes drive from the center of Zarautz and half of them are open for visits and tastings. Cheers!🍷

Eco camping or farm campings are campsites that are environmental conscious. For example, an eco-campsite uses energy and water sparingly. They also try to limit the amount of waste and dispose of it responsibly. These campsites are also rather small and only have a few pitches availble which makes it more private. You can see this campings as modern-day campings unlike the dirty & ugly campsites that many people have in mind when they think of camping.

If you are more into city vibes, you can head to San Sebastian. San Sebastian is the ideal combination of restaurants, bars, shops and the seaside. Here it is also possible to surf but the beach area is smaller than in Biarritz or Zarautz. Very known here is the Pinxtos Bars. You need to try this out! Small tapas dishes, all specialities of the basque region.

🥂 Pinxtos Bars & restaurants : Taberna Napparrak ( traditional bar ), Taberna Salegi ( nice setting ), Kirkilla Enea Jatetxea ( open kitchen ), SIdreria-Asador Izeta ( Grill Restaurant ), Telesforo ( local restaurant )

Roadtrip Basque Country

In general you can fill this roadtrip with whatever you feel like. The advantage of this destination is that nature, culture and city can be combined. Camping is also possible if you like to explore cities. The ideal combination with access to the sea to completely unwind from time to time. Spain is also very accessible for roadtripping because you are allowed to wildcamp. Note you must be at least 100m from the sea. In addition, you may not wild camp in national parks or nature parks at all. Otherwise, you are free to pitch your Toptent wherever you want. If you ask me, the ideal roadtrip itinerary for 1 week to get away from the Belgian weather! ☀️
