This roadtrip is a great example of a getaway where you don´t need to go far to find yourself in a complete different atmosphere. Based on weather predictions for the coming 2 days, we decided to head to Mers-les-bains. This municipality is a seaside ⛵ and tourist resort on the Somme, located on the English Channel coast, just north of the mouth of the Bresle, on the border between the Hauts-de-France and Normandy regions. Mers-les-bains is a 3 hour drive from Kortrijk and therefore perfect to head to if you only have 2 days to get out of the city. We left in the morning around 10 AM and arrived in the afternoon which was perfect as we had enough time to visit Mers-les-bains. You can choose to camp in the region as there are 2 campsites in Mers-les-bains itself. Wild camping is prohibited here ( as for the rest in France ) but you can also ask a landlord if you can have an overnight stay on it´s ground if you found a great spot in nature. Due to weather circumstances we decided last minute to book an guesthouse via air bnb and were therefore more guaranteed to have a good night sleep as storms were predicted.

A picturesque area by the sea where the coastline is filled with beautiful colored houses. You can compare it to the belgian coast, but smaller & more authentic.

Discover the coastline

🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️After a quick tour in the small city, we headed to the sea side and started walking. We walked in the direction of Le Treport. Le Treport is a small comune in Normandy known for its port and therefore it´s fresh fish. Walking to Treport took 30 minutes in total. You can spot the lighthouse and also see the chalk clifs that stick out which makes the place unique. You can compare it to the clifs of Etretat which also forms natural arches and rise above the sea. When we arrived in Le Treport we headed to a little local cafe to try out some oysters 🦪 and wine 🍷. There are a lot of small cafes that offer some fresh seafood and drinks (have a look at the deals they offer f.e. oysters + wine for 10 euros). When passing by the many cafes you will definitely find the perfect spot to enjoy some sea food. Our cafe was just across the local fish market. While tasting some oysters, we decided to prepare ourself a meal in the evening instead of eating out. Nothing is better than some fresh fish from the market with some bread from a local bakery. In the fish market they also sell wine, so this makes it very easy as you don´t need to go to a supermarket anymore. After chosing what we wanted on our fruits de mers plate, we headed back to our air bnb and prepared our plate of sea food. 🦀 We closed the night by watching the sunset on the dike. 🌅

On our roadtrips we really like to go to the bakery and buy some fresh breakfast pastries as croissants 🥐. As we don´t go to a bakery very often in Kortrijk we really like to do this during our trip. The bakeries in France are also sooo much better than in Belgium – so we really recommend this when you´re travelling in France. ☕ After our short walk to the bakery, we had breakfast in our air bnb and packed our stuff. Normally we planned to do a long hike in the region of ´Le Crotoy´. This area is known for it´s beautifull nature and therefore the perfect place to go for a hike. Due to bad weather circumstances, we decided to head to a city and went to Boulogne-sur-mere. Boulogne-sur-mer is a city, known for it´s major fishing port on the north coast of France (1h30 drive from Mers-les-bains). The rather small city is nice to visit if you are in for some shopping and tasty sea food. 🐟

After discovering the city we headed back home and ended our trip with a evening walk in Kortrijk. We really enjoyed getting out and being in a different environment for 2 days. We always enjoy these short trips where you don´t need to go far to be surrounded by a completely different atmosphere – perfect for a 2 days getaway. You can decide to do this while camping or by staying in a homestay or guesthouse ( cheap stays on air bnb ). Due to bad weather circumstances we  sometimes don´t really have a choice of booking an overnight stay last minute. Most of the times we don´t really know in advance where we are heading to or where we will sleep which means we usually decide last minute based on the circumstances. In general always an adventure !
