Dolomites – North Italy

🏃‍♀️ The starting point of our trekking –  Palaronda Trek – was in San Martino di Castrozza. This is a very known village to start a hike in the dolomites for one, two, three or multiple days. As we had a tight schedule – we had 3 full days to do a trek. I searched before hand on the internet information about the treks in the dolomites this for three days. In general no trek was only 3 days but we decided to do the 4 days trek in 3 days as it looked possible to do in terms of distance and altimeters. As we are medium experienced hikers and go for a hike now and then we didn´t saw any big problems coming up here. Next to deciding which trek to hike, I also made a reservation for the Refugio´s. I really advice to do that because you don´t have many options in the mountains to have an overnight stay ( only the Refugio´s) and in the high season they are very occupied so make sure to make a reservation there upfront. I made the reservations in april – our roadtrip was in july. You can just search the Refugio´s name on google and you will land on their website. There you have the contact information in order to send them an e-mail and make the reservation. If you don´t receive an answer – call them in order to be sure that you have an overnight stay.

⛺️ When we arrived in San Martino di Castrozza we decided to search a camping close the starting point. As there are not that many camping it can be a help to book one in front but we didn´t and were able to stay at a camping 10 minutes drive from our starting point. Camping Calavise is definitely a good camping but very basic. You get the typical image of a camping there – old, with trailers and old (nice) people living there – but in general no big remarks. The camping also consist of a great restaurants where you can drink aperol´s, order some food and also have breakfast if you want. Because we drove from Belgium to the Dolomites without any overnight stay we arrived at the camping in the afternoon and got some sleep in order to be fit and full of energy to start hiking the day after. We woke up early in the morning (5 am) as the predicted weather circumstances were not ideal. We wanted to start earlier in order to arrive at our first Refugio before it would start raining in the afternoon.

🏃‍♀️ Eventually we started hiking at 6AM, we parked our car at a cable car point where there was surveilance during the day and night and were able to park there for free. ( just go inside and aks if they can keep an eye on the car + give your nummer plate license and telephone nummer in case of emergency – but in general a very safe area with just tourist traffic to do the hikes. The first part of the hike was fairly tough and steep. Since at that point we couldn’t quite estimate how fast we would step & we were forced to arrive best before the rain we stepped well ahead. ( you can also chose to take the cable cars for the first part as it is quit tough but than you also need to wait until 9 am when they open ). By 10AM we had already ascended nicely and took some time to get the drone out and take some nice images of the viewpoint.

📍Around noon we arrived at Refugio Rosetta. If you do the hiking in 4 days, this Refugio is the first one to make a reservation to sleep. In general you see here that we were able to finish the first etape (8.21KM – 1.163M) by noon (= 1st day). The second etape we continued after a lunch break at Refugio Rosetta. The area around the Refugio is also beautifull so we decided to make some more video´s here before continuing our second part of the day etape 2 (= 2nd day).

📍As the 2nd etape (7.8KM – 162M) was not heavy we arrived already in Refugio Pradidali around 2 pm in the afternoon. Our first day was in general tough because we could not yet estimate how much time they would need for the climbs. We hiked well all day without many breaks so we arrived at our overnight stop earlier than expected – but before it started to rain. When we arrived we had more than time to rest a little bit and we took some time to play some board games that are available in the Refugio. In general next to reading, playing some board games and talking to/ getting to know other hikers – you can´t do a lot there. There is also no signal there so you don´t have much to do on your phone – very nice to disconnect for a while, when going through this amazing hiking experience. Take time to rest & get to know some other hikers who will share their stories.

🍝In the evening there is dinner prepared in the Refugio. There is a fixed menu and you can chose between a meat/fish dish or vegetarian option. You will be placed at a table with other hikers from different countries – the ideal moment to get to know each other and talk about each others hiking routes. You can have some wine or others drinks that are available. For the stay and dinner plus breakfast you pay around 60 euro´s/person. You can say that this is expensive but it is normal as the Refugio´s are located deep in the mountains and logistically not that convenient to bring food, beverages or other needs to the Refugios.

☕️Breakfast is served around 8AM and afterwards everyone starts it route again based on their trakking shedule. Etape 3 (7.5KM – 1286M) was quite heavy for us because we had walked well the day before, rested little, we were already a lot less energetic than day 1, but we did it again. A day full of different environments – from walking through  vegetaded areas to moon landscapes. We saw so many different places that day as we walked several KM and also the altimeters were not less. We arrived at our Refugio Trevisio again around 3PM. That day we also  walked a few KM the wrong way which took us a little longer. In general another great day with a lot of different views and vegetation.

📍On our third and last day – etape 4 (8KM-1000M) we headed back to Refugio Rosetta. Again a day with beautifull landscapesand views. In general you can choose which route you want to take whenever you want. You can make it a little bit longer by adding another stop in between but can also chose to take the short route. The route is marked well and you just have to follow the signs pointing to relevant Refugio you are heading to. In general you can do this 4 day hike in 4 days as suggested on many sites. This will give you a solid hike that is doable for everyone without overdoing yourself. If you combine 2 etapes in one day, as we did – you make it a little bit heavier but doable for experienced hikers. When we arrived again at Refugio Rosetta we decided to take the cable cars back to the starting village. We arrived at the cable cars around 4PM. The last cable car goes down around 5PM – so if you don´t want to go down by feet – make sure to be there before 5PM. Arriving back in San Martino di Castrozza was truly amazing – the feeling of finishing the hiking trail felt so good. We went to the closest cafe and treated ourselfs on a coke – never had a coke tasted so good, just amazing. After resting for a moment and reflect on our 3 day hike we headed back to the camping from the first day and booked another night. Ate at the restaurant our first pizza in Italy and prepared ourself for the rest of our trip. After the dolomites we headed to Lago di Bolsena to relax for a couple of days. 😌
